The freshmen cup football tournament at Lu Da's campus had kicked off. Nan University was known for its lively sports culture, with three fields located on Chifeng Road and Siping Road bustling with matches almost every week. Although the frequency of matches wasn't as high as in other places, each game attracted a considerable crowd, especially those involving department-level teams. While it was unlikely to have officially organized cheerleaders, there were plenty of amateur supporters.
As usual before any school event, there was relentless promotion day and night. Unlike the inter-school league, the freshmen cup consisted of teams formed by each college and class, with varying levels of skill. Nevertheless, the sheer number of participating teams often kept the tournament going for about a week, with matches scheduled daily in the morning and afternoon. The student council was busy organizing everything.
The team from Su Can's class had been selected as an eleven-man squad, essentially pieced together, largely due to Su Can taking the lead despite his initial lack of interest in this aspect.
However, their floor leader Wang Dongjian, who wasn't satisfied with merely being a dormitory head, went straight to the student council and leveraged his senior status within it. He managed to secure a position as vice-minister in charge of sports affairs and encouraged Su Can to organize his team, even arranging for them to draw an advantageous match against what was considered an easy opponent.
Throughout university life, volleyball matches, soccer games, basketball games, track meets, and even baseball tournaments usually left a lasting impression. These events were the curtain-raisers for豐富多彩的大學生活活動,無疑是非常熱鬨的。
The few days of the group stage passed in a bumpy manner. Occasionally, there would be instances where popularity surged, but this wasn't due to how well the teams played against each other; it was because some beautiful girls from the Student Council were acting as referees on match day and naturally attracted attention, which indeed boosted their popularity.
Su Cun's team managed to advance to the semi-finals. With Li Han's words: "It’s all about luck."
Su Cun's team was put together randomly. The most noticeable feature was that each of the four people from his dorm took their respective positions, with no one being left out. Li Han is a forward, specialized in dodging and shooting, often interfering when he goes for the ball. Zhang Xiaqiao is a winger who waits for opportunities to intercept and pass, depending on his mood. Su Cun himself acts as the center-forward; basically, he just shouts commands and lacks both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. However, his reborn experiences in high school have given him some expertise. Xiao XU serves as a defender; if someone breaks through the first three lines of defense, the team has to pray when it reaches Xiao Xu's line.
In addition, they also picked up several people from their class who had varying levels of football experience. Despite this combination, advancing to the semi-finals was unexpected by everyone in the class as morale was low and not many believed they could do it. Suddenly, they gained confidence, which even led some classmates who weren't particularly interested in football to start following news about the matches.
The atmosphere of the semi-final stage differed significantly from that of the group stage, with popularity rising sharply. The crowds at each match were no longer sparse; second and third-year students from various departments were also brought by connections. Situations where different faculties would yell at one another as they faced off became common occurrences, eventually leading to a point where several faculties formed alliances. As a result, the stadium was nearly divided into halves, with flags of each side clearly displayed.
Shouts and cheers erupted in waves continuously.
Su Cun's team had entered the semi-finals under these circumstances and were now facing their opponent from Class Twelve. Nan Da’s football level isn't high, but it doesn’t mean there aren't any good players; at least Nan Da's university team is semi-professional. Crucially, today's opponents include several members of the Management College team, which is known to be a strong force. These few people joining their side significantly increased Su Cun’s team pressure.
However, the interest in Su Cun's class match remained high; on one hand, the robust support from their cheering squad boosted morale to some extent. Although the opposing team was formidable, they were slightly lacking in terms of supporters. Hearing that it was a game involving Su Cun’s class, quite a few first-year classes and departments had sent over senior classmates and seniors just to come watch, so their cheerleading group was still strong.
Su Cen spotted Tang Wu in the audience. She was with a group of friends, apparently classmates who had come to watch the match. Tang Wu seemed to be the center of this group. When she saw Su Cen, she nodded at him, immediately drawing much envy from others.
Midway through the game, four people approached Tang Wu: three men and one woman, dressed casually. However, as they walked over, several high-ranking students from the Student Council kept glancing their way. One of the vice-presidents intended to greet them but was stopped by a man who exchanged some words with him. The vice-president nodded, took out a cigarette and handed it to the man before leaving.
Tang Wu knew these four people—more specifically, she knew Mo Xue. Mo Xue was a vice-chairperson of the Student Council and also a member of Nan Da's BBS Club. Tang Wu had known about this beforehand; later on, she learned more details.
Mo Xue’s parents were officials: her mother is a member of the CPPCC in Jiangsu, while her father holds a deputy-ministerial position in a city in Hunan. Mo Xue herself is very capable and interned at Oriental Television during her third year of university. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in TV hosting or program planning.
The two families were acquaintances. Therefore, Mo Xue knew Tang Wu well and had introduced her to the club.
However, due to Su Cen's interference, the gathering that initially planned to admit Tang Wu as an associate member for one year was disbanded without success. This time, their visit was specifically about this matter.
About this time, it was nearly the end of the second half. With a whistle, Su Cen’s team lost 0-1 to the opposing side. To make it this far was already quite good; the other side's players were indeed very skilled. Making it this far was an impressive achievement.
The players were drenched in sweat. Xiao Xu, who ran over, said, "Damn, these wild guys! We can't beat them no matter how hard we try. Well, looks like we won’t make it to the top eight."
Zhang Xiaqiao walked over and looked at Su Cen on the stand, saying, “You might want to go take a look; those four are big shots at Nan Da. Who knows, there may be bigger news than our loss.”
The four people were talking to Tang Wu on the stands. She was smiling but seemed somewhat conflicted, while others around her looked at her with envy or jealousy.
Su Cen nodded and walked across the field, climbed up the steps to the stands, and came before them. He asked, "Is there something you want"
Aside from one male who was a stranger, these people were all those that Su Cen had met at Holiday Hotel on Christmas Day last semester.
One of them was called Liu Menghui and another Mo Qinghe. Back then during gatherings at Nan University and ESSEC in Shanghai, Mo Qinghe seemed to have a good relationship with the rather scheming Liu Xiaoqing; they had also discussed some profitable ideas together before, all very structured and organized. Liu Menghui was only twenty-one years old while Mo Qinghe was around twenty-two, but their perspectives and thoughts were quite mature. Back then it had surprised Su Cen slightly to think that Nan University’s clubs were indeed full of talent.
Liu Menghui had interacted with Su Cen before; he nodded at him with a smile, "You played well."
Moe Qinghe smiled and said, "Although we lost, victory and defeat are common in battle. It’s normal, it’s normal."
The other man just glanced at Su Cen, took a drag from the cigarette he was holding, and slowly said, "So you’re Su Cen"
This made Su Cen inwardly fume; he thought that even Nan University’s president Lu Chuanming hadn’t been so pompous. So he didn’t bother responding.
To avoid an awkward situation, Mo Xue spoke up and said, "Well, since you’re here too now, Su Cen, you should already know about our Future Entrepreneurs Club. I’ll go into more detail about it: this is an organization founded by old alumni that advocates innovation in high-tech fields and entrepreneurship. Its predecessor was the Nan University Alumni Association of course, but not the one comprising just your classmates; these alumni’s initial members came from places like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Silicon Valley in America. Most graduated from Nan University back in the 90s; they’re all uncles or aunts to you.
Mo Xue teased this before continuing, "All of them have tough entrepreneurial backgrounds with remarkable achievements, each owning their own company or holding high positions at famous enterprises both domestically and abroad. So after renaming it as the Entrepreneurs Club, it’s become more influential due to these people's efforts and the university’s support. Our alumni span about twenty years, even longer in some cases. The admissions process is also quite stringent; we’re here today to ask for your opinions, whether you want to join our club.
The Nan University Alumni Association wants to recruit me Su Cen was stunned, wondering if he had heard correctly He had just humiliated them the last time, and originally thought they would be criticizing him left and right; yet now they wanted to recruit him. Could this be an organization that you join when you owe them a loteplaced by a desire for the truth. "This sounds like something out of a novel—romantic yet unrealistic. Wouldn’t his girlfriend get upset if he hid this from her for so long""How would you know what s...
